Household income in Canada the US and around the World
Family and single incomes vary widely around the world, everyone pretty much knows that. It really isn’t a secret. But, for the disabled person, it gets even worse.
However, In this post I want you to know that being disabled doesn’t mean you have to be living in poverty. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that all disabled or handicapped people are poor or living in poverty because, clearly some people are but, in this day and age, it definitely does not have to be that way.
Before I get to the “How” and the “Why” I want to show you, as good as I can, “What” the real picture looks like today in some parts of the world. Most of us work hard for our money but some have to work harder for a lot less.
The Average income in Canada in 2017
I chose to start here because this is my home country. Statistics released in 2017 showed that the average total income for Canadian families/households increased from $63,457 in 2005 to $70,336 in 2015 which adds up to an increase of 10.8%.
These stats were released by Statistics Canada in 2017 from a census taken in 2016 and is a pretty significant growth over the previous 10 years.
But the average for the disabled in Canada drops significantly. To me, it’s rather disturbing because, depending on the disability, earnings can vary quite a bit. Information from Sats Canada revealed that those with mental-cognitive disabilities earned $12,200 If they had a learning disability and up to $14,700 for those who had a mental health disability.
It doesn’t get much better if you have physical or sensory disabilities. Those who have a fine motor control handicap should only expect to earn about $15,500 and those with a hearing disability would only earn $24,000. These stats are from 2014 and It may have gotten a little better now but, I suspect, when you take in inflation, it’s probably not really that much better.
Average Incomes in the US
I’m including the U.S. because they are our neighbor and have one of the biggest economies in the world. In the United States, that average income in 2013 was $51,939 USD. This data was released in 2014 and is an average taken across all jobs.
That average rose to $56,516 in 2015, up 5.2% from 2014.
For people with disabilities, it’s really not really any better in the U.S. than it is in Canada. As the screenshot below shows, there is a huge gap between those with disabilities and those who don’t and, the gap is getting bigger every year. Not a great picture at all.
The Rust color is for those with a disability/ handicap and blue is for those who don’t.
How About Australia?
This was really interesting to me. In Australia, the average was $78,832 AD’S a year in Full-time earnings in the second quarter of 2016. When bonuses and overtime are included the average annual wage would be $81,947 AD.
A news article written in 2014 said that there were 10,000 workers, who had disabilities, being paid less than minimum wage and, in some cases were being paid $.99/hr which translates to less than $40 a week. The article also reported that some of these workers were working for government-supported Australian disability enterprises.
Moving forward to October 1, 2017, when The Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction announced that people on income assistance and disability would receive an extra $100 starting with the September 2017 Payment.
Those who were receiving disability assistance but did not have a bus pass would receive $1,133/month and those who were on income assistance would now receive $710/month. That works out to $13,596 and $8,520 respectively per year. I couldn’t find out what else those on Income Assistance were getting but I’m willing to bet that it still wouldn’t be enough to live properly.
This definitely is not right and you are probably asking, “How can I change my outlook for the future?”
Well, You have obviously been searching the internet trying to find some kind of answer to your dilemma and you found this page. I want you to know that there is something you can do about it.
If you are determined to improve your life and break free from the status quo, there are many ways to do that on the Internet. That is why I am writing this article, to give you a few suggestions, out of many, on how you can make a better living on the Internet.
But First, a Small Warning
But, before I do that I want to tell you that you shouldn’t expect to start making a lot of money in a short period. As with any business or online endeavor, it takes time getting things going to the point of actually making money. It will be at least a few months maybe a little more. You have to build your content and draw traffic and build trust with those you are trying to reach.
Not only does it take time, it also takes commitment and determination. There are a lot of so-called “Programs” out there that will guarantee you overnight success with huge rewards in no time. This just isn’t true. All they want is your money and many have found this to be true. Too many in my opinion. However, If you are willing to do the hard work, it WILL happen.
What Can Those With Disabilities Do About This?
Become A Blogger
So, let’s get back on track.
As I said, there are many opportunities to make money on the Internet and one of the most popular ways to do that is by creating a blog and writing about your passion or other things that interest you. You can do this a couple of different ways.
One way is to start your own website around a particular niche and write about products and topics that surround that niche. It could be about just about anything:
- the latest trends in the car industry or
- the next hot vacation spot,
- health and nutrition.
Pretty much anything that is talked about or sold on the Internet has some kind of niche associated with it.
You can also place ads on your site that are associated with your niche or topic. Money is made from these when someone clicks through and buys something or through a thing called PPC or Paid Per Click. Another way is to write reviews about products that you like and or have used yourself.
Be a Freelance Writer
Another way is to write for someone else is creating content for their website. My research say’s that this type of blogger can make anywhere between $10 – $100 or more per article. Some pro-bloggers make $10,000 a month but they have had to work hard and gain a large following to be this successful.
So, if you like to write and you’re good at it, this might be the opportunity for you. This also takes a little time to build up a following but once you have that, being a freelance writer could become quite lucrative.
Be an Affiliate Marketer
I kind of alluded to this earlier. It involves having your own website. So, what is affiliate marketing you may ask?
A simple definition of “Affiliate Marketing” would basically be, the promotion of other peoples/businesses products on a website that you have created. You would write reviews about the products and join affiliate programs that sell these items. When you join these affiliate programs you will receive what is called an Affiliate Link which is plugged into your website content.
When someone visits your website and reads your review and then clicks on the link you have provided for that product, they are taken to the sellers’ website where they might the item and/or something seller’s and a commission will be paid to your bank account or PayPal account or by cheque depending on how the business runs their program.
If this is something that interests you, you can check out my blog about “Who Has The Best Affiliate Programs”…just CLICK HERE.
If you choose this route, and you are new to this kind of thing, you may also want to look for some training about how to build a website, learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), building traffic and, monetizing your site.
This is another way to make some money online but, I wouldn’t recommend this if you are looking to make enough money to support yourself. The reason for this is that, even though they will send out lots of requests to take a survey, you won’t necessarily be accepted for all of them. In fact, you will be rejected for more than you are accepted for.
They are good if you just want to make a little extra cash.
Do Videos on YouTube
There isn’t very many of us, handicapped or not, that haven’t watched a video on YouTube. There are millions of them out there and a lot of people are making a lot of money from that side of social media.
You could videotape your life and show the difficulties you and others like you have to deal with on a daily basis. Or, you could do a news video every couple of days or do reviews and unboxing of products in a particular niche you like. If you have expertise in a certain area, you could post training videos. The ideas are endless.
You don’t even need expensive equipment getting started, just a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera. If you have a video camcorder and a computer you’re good to go. All you have to do is:
- make sure the audio is clear. You don’t want too much noise in the background to distract the viewer.
- The light is good. Dark Videos don’t look that good. You want people to be able to see what you have recorded.
- A good editing tool is also a must and there are lots of good free ones out there to start up with.
- Make sure that your content is interesting and engaging.
OH! And, it doesn’t have to be fancy and you could open accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks to reach out further and get peoples attention. you could post it on your blog as well if you have one.
Well, there you have it. These are just a few of the many ways to make money on the Internet and get yourself out of the status quo and onto a life with more freedom and less stress and, help your friends to do the same.
If you have more than one idea that you would like to pursue that’s OK as well but just start with one and see where it goes. You can always build out other ideas later as you get more experienced in the online world.
